COMMUNITY INSTITUTIONAL
Buena Vista United Methodist Church
Alameda, CA

This Church design was developed after leading an extensive participatory process and feasibility study. The participatory process included questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, committee meetings and three workshops with the whole congregation. The resulting study included three conceptual alternatives, with estimated construction costs and planning ramifications. The final design focused on expanding the Sanctuary and the Social Hall buildings and making the facilities fully accessible. The design for expanding the Sanctuary preserves and enhances the dramatic shape of the existing roof. New entry doors to three of the four Church buildings will eventually open onto an outdoor gathering space that will help unify the buildings.
